Proof against China
Some smart guy that knows how computers work took the time to research one of the Chinese gymnast's records and has come up with official government documents that list her birthday as 1-1-94 which makes her 14. This is conclusive evidence that at least one gymnast is underage. It's so cool how he found this because it's so easy to do. Check it out before he's killed by Chinese government spies.

Summer is almost over..
It's been over a month since I blogged because I suck at life. I've been busy between work and summer classes, probably busier than I will be this fall. This is what I've been up to this past month.
*I got a call to intern at MTV/VH1 this fall. I applied back in late winter this year and they just now got back to me. Unfortunately it's a little too late to make arrangements to live in NYC for 10 weeks (no time to save up and find housing and figure out job related matters since I wouldn't keep the one I have, already set up for fall, lease signed, etc.) I also got a call from Nickelodeon Studios in Burbank. WTF. Why can't they call at a reasonable time! Oh well.
*I finished up my Summer II classes.I got a B+ in Noir in Digital Culture (which turned out to be much more difficult than I hoped it would) and an A- in Video for Web 2.0.
*I went to a wedding for Nathan's best friend in the Chicago area. We were there for 3 days in the Gurnee area. It was fun.
*Went to Cincinnati for a couple days with some friends. We went to the Cincy Zoo and Newport Aquarium. Cincinnati is so blah. I would never want to live there. It was a beautiful afternoon and there was NO ONE out on the streets downtown. That's scary. We stayed at the Millennium hotel which was nice but not worth full price (we paid less than half through hotwire.com). I loved the Cincy Zoo - it's huge and they have a ton of cats. We did the penguin encounter too and got to meet three black footed penguins up close and touch them.
*Went to the state fair a couple times. The first time was with Michelle to go see the backstreet boys. It was freakin awesome. A lot of the people there were our age and obviously just aging fans from their hey-day because the older songs were much louder than the new ones. Everyone was so excited to be there. It was more fun than the last time I saw them even though it was severely scaled down. It was probably the loudest concert I've ever attended as well.
The second time was with some friends. It was a good night.
*I came down with a sinus infection this last week and have had lots of fun with that.
*I've been watching the Olympics nonstop. I love the Olympics. I like the idea of everyone coming to compete for the best in the world, even if I'm not an athlete personally. I like when they showcase non-superstars or favorites from tiny countries that have no chance but are competing anyway. There's such a variety of events that happen in two weeks and it's the only time I can watch gymnastics - I can never find it on any other time.
*I'm going to be volunteering at a local cat shelter. I'm going to do shelter tasks as well as do some video for them.
*I joined ChaCha and was accepted as an SMS Guide. That means when you text a question to 242242, I'm one of the people on the other end answering it. It's a lot of fun because you learn a lot of random stuff and you're allowed to add your own personal touch. There are a lot of retarded questions like 'Who is this person from this high school' which end up being funny because 9 times out of 10, you can find SOMETHING on that person. Just about everyone is on the internet in some way by now. I get paid 10 or 20 cents per question depending on accuracy and volume completed. The system has been funny the last two days but despite that I've managed to make $14. When it hits $100 it will load into my bank account :-D
*I also did a little bit of wedding related stuff. We booked our DJ and started collecting everyone's address. I also bought some ribbon. Productive.
So now I need to catch up on some other things while it's raining outside. I'm off until Monday, then I probably don't have a real whole day off for a while.

why is it so hot
why has it been so hot and stormy? i think it's making up for lost time since we haven't had good storms for a year or two. i hate night storms because they just tend to annoy me and make the power go out.
i made a deposit on our wedding, so now it's happening at valle vista fo sho. june 14th at 4:30 instead of the 7th because it was taken. lame.
i've been getting kind of annoyed at finding an officiant and photographer. officiants charge $300 or more and their websites so are ugly. they talk about how great their service is and how it's personalized but really, come on. everybody knows it's just a template they pull and that's all we WANT, why charge for "personalization" that doesn't exist? that doesn't seem very Christianly. If anyone wants to officiate for a free meal, I'm all for it.
and photographers are frustrating because all the good ones are way expensive, but the crappy ones are still sort of expensive.
we did decide we're going to do our rehearsal dinner at an original waffle house that's on the south side. hahaha.
and in nonwedding news, this friday is zoobilation. that means i'll be outside all day, go home and sleep, and then clean all night. $21/hr aaaawesomee. then i have saturday off.
two more summer class meetings, then it'll be summer II. then i'll have THREE classes to worry about through july. sweet :P the things i do for a degree. when i get my degree next spring, i'm going to cry.
in fact, next spring is going to be extremely busy and emotional:
-May 1st - capstone presentations
-May 4th - last day of college FOREVAAAAAuntil maybe grad school? oh well not for now.
-May 10th - commencement
-june 12th - rehearsal
-june 14th - ceremony
and then somewhere in there i have to do all the final details of the wedding, find a job, and work on moving if i need to relocate. so june 15th we'll either be taking off for our honeymoon or taking off for our new home.
and i'm not letting anything get in the way of relocating far away. i know my mom will be all 'if you stay here in indy and get a job, you will be able to do a honeymoon!' or something. yea, 1 week vacation vs. adventure in new state/city/country. yes, i said country, you never know. i am applying to a few production houses in london for the hell of it. that would be the bomb.
i should go outside but augh, it's so much work to get dressed and go downstairs, and i have nothing to do really. wow i'm pathetic.

what's been up
haven't updated for a while. here's what's been up.
-started summer class. flash animation has been good, very easy so far. i could see myself getting into this. it's good to start thinking in keyframes as well. visual basic was easy to get back into from high school until i got to the coding view. i might be effed.
-took our engagement pictures last week. it was cold and rainy so we went to the botanical gardens at the zoo instead. they haven't been finished yet, but here's one of my favorite shots that doesn't need much photoshopping, if any.
- we visited valle vista and i freakin loved it. it's NICE. the ceremony site is connected to the reception room. the ceremony room is even nicer than expected, and actually quite unique. the reception room is pretty typical of a country club or banquet hall, but it's classy. i like the fact they do everything for you, and i've heard good things about them. so i'm pretty sure we're going to go with that place and get a deposit on it asap. looks like we're going to be getting married june 7th 2009 at 4:30 pm. now we just need to find a freaking officiant.
-michelle and i have embarked on a new zoo-related project - an interactive web-based guide to the animals at the zoo, with personal information about the popular ones. we're doing it on the side throughout the summer and we'd like it to be flash based with some video clips and photos. yea, it's kind of ambitious.
-i don't really plan on getting out that much this summer, but michelle, jason, nathan and i are thinking of going on a two day trip to cincinnati as well. we want to visit the cincy zoo and newport aquarium. and then we're going to steven's wedding in july. i think that'll be it. i really wish we could go to a more interesting state than ohio, or even a weekend in chicago would be nice, but who can afford it. meh,
-355 days til graduation! i've also decided to keep a new countdown on my dashboard - days until i start applying for real jobs. 195 days until i start harassing people hardcore.
oh yea, i've outlined a 10 year plan for your amusement.
2009 - graduate, get married, get a job, move to southern california.
2009-2011 - work for a trailer production house
2012 - 2015 - if the mayans are wrong, work as an assistant editor on a tv show or with movies
2015 - reconsider my options and decide whether or not i should go to grad school for digital effects or color grading or something like that
2015-2017 - assistant editor/senior editor OR grad school (some combination)
2017-2019 - senior editor/leadership role
of course, if i do end up in hollywood (and the more i think about it, the more the lifestyle of southern california does appeal to me in every way and always has), things can move a lot faster than this (or go in a completely different direction), so this isn't really my map. it's just a possibility i wouldn't mind - would be nice to be at a director of post level by my early thirties.

grades yo
despite this being the most grueling semester yet (and i didn't think anything could top spring 07), i got some sweet grades. i did 16 credit hours, 13 hours/week at the museum interning, and 20 hours minimum at the zoo (usually 30) and spent the rest of my time at school in the labs. since this is my blog im going to brag. eat it suckas.
Client-side Web Programming : B- (extremely difficult labs, this class blew. i got behind in feb and effed it up a bit)
Intro to Yoga - A-
Internship - A
Intermediate Sound - A- !!! (This was the most honestly difficult class I've had so far and it took the most effort.)
Software Project Management - A+ (Didn't know they gave A+'s in college. It makes my plain ol' A's look shabby, but that's ok.)
Lighting and Field Production - A-
My major GPA still holds close to a 3.9, my semester is around 3.6, and my cumulative is around 3.4 or 3.5. And since my GPA doesn't matter to any employers, I don't really care.
No celebrations though since Visual Basic (osigwjmvgklemgjvwnbvolnwv) and Intro to Flash start tomorrow, and it'll be 7 weeks of regular semester work shoved in my brain and stirred around.
in other news, i voted for obama in the indiana democratic primary today. we went to the obama rally last night. it was sweet.
EDIT: i got better grades than i thought. Yoga is an A and Client-side is a B+! omfgwut. So all A's and one stinkin B+. WOOP WOOOOOP!

wedding dresses
yesterday me and breanne went wedding dress shopping for the first time. it was pretty weird. in david's bridal all they play is wedding music. and when you are trying stuff on, you are on a little stage with pedestals, like dolls. wedding dresses are uncomfortable and heavy. but they are so pwetty. i actually think i found the one i want. here are the ones i tried on:
my favorite is the last one. it's pretty much exactly what i had in mine when i started looking at dresses online - no beads or sparkly things - all the design aspects are built into how the fabric stretches and is cut. i wasn't crazy about the flower but i kind of like it now. however, i'm going to ask my mom if there's any old brooches or clips i could replace it with that belonged to her mom or someone in our family. i think it would look very classic and antique with something like that there. this picture has the dress in ivory but i would likely order it in white. i also like it because it has a sweep train, which is a little bit of fabric on the back - nothing to bustle. and it's flattering. ha.

stimulate this (that's what she said)
the economic stimulus package thing is such crap. mainly because i don't get anything and neither do my parents.
my parents claim me as a dependent so i can stay on their insurance and they pay for a lot of crap. so they claimed me on their taxes this year.
people will be getting $300 per dependent child. any child who was claimed does not get the payment themselves.
however, you have to be under the age of 17.
basically if you're in college and still claimed by your parents (as a majority of college students are), you get nothing and your parents get nothing. you could even be in high school and not get anything.
i'm a full time college student and i earned about $14,000 last year which translates to like a billion tax dollars paid, but noooo. i don't get my freebie borrowed money (that i will surely be paying back in my lifetime).

ufo in kokomo?
some weird stuff went down in kokomo tonight. some weird weird stuff. basically around 10:45, there were lights and fire in the sky, and a loud boom. cameron freaked out and alerted me to this, and of course we began listening to the kokomo police scanner. it began going insane and nobody knew what was going on. people were saying it must have been an airplane crash. they were searching everywhere for it. they were all over the place, nobody knew where to start looking. the faa says all planes are accounted for, and the military bases say there are no crafts in the area. they went to western to meet and start a search, then apparently messed up and were to be at northwestern. then there was a fire reported, it was on the news, someone called and said they smelled a gas leak, alarms went off at the business surrounding the area. then they said it was a meteorological event and called everything off.
now...what? here is the timeline as i understand it:
10:45 - fireball in the sky splits into 4 perfectly lined up blobs, along with a loud boom that was intensely felt through all of the kokomo, not just one specific area. cameron craps his pants. katee is freaked out because she just got home from work and saw the fireballs and thinks it was a ufo.
10:50 - no idea where to look still since witnesses are calling from everywhere. mention of calling in nationl guard. people reporting debris and cloud of smoke.
10:53 - mention of ground troops
10:56 - mention of switching to emergency (not broadcast) channels for some personnel (so they can talk freely and not be heard on the scanner)
11:10 - mention on news via tv and internet
11:30 - start to call it meteorological event (one officer says he doesn't believe it is one since it was too intense) same thing happened in cass county two days earlier.
11:45 - search is called off
if i were a sci-fi conspiracy theorist, i would say it's interesting that they were speaking freely until they were asked to move to the emergency channel, and that they stopped talking about military as soon as that occurred. and then they couldn't find anything and gave up relatively quickly. if i were into that sort of thing, i would say kokomo is the roswell of our time.
but what's likely the truth? somebody (a pilot) mentioned seeing F-16s heading back to the base in Fort Wayne tonight. he said he figured they were shooting flares and one of them went super sonic, accounting for everything we saw. of course, the air force bases denied having crafts in the area but they always do. so that's what probably happened and somebody is getting yelled at for going super sonic over kokomo at night and causing a panic. but it doesn't explain the debris first reported, the cloud of smoke, or the fact an entire area was blocked off for a while. flares? smoke? not the same.
but if i were you, kokomo, i'd be watching out for super soldiers, the black oil, or some little green men. if i was in kokomo tonight, i would totally go on a wild goose chase.

its BLOG BLOG BLOG
so what's up with everyone and their mom in kokomo getting a blog all of the sudden? did something occur at an event that inspired everyone to blog? i always find it funny when this phenomenon happens because it dies out after a few weeks or months and then there are a bunch of dead blogs laying around (thank god the internet doesn't generate waste, our planet would be covered in sludge from all the dead websites). sometimes one or two blogs make it through to continue living but most of the time, rest in peace.
i've been blogging since before "blogging" was a word (oh, aren't i amazing?) in various venues on a regular to semi-regular basis. my first online journal was on deadjournal.com in 8th grade, i think. the continuous blogging picked up in 9th grade for sure. i've been on deadjournal, livejournal, xanga, blogger, myspace, facebook, blogspot, and in various places on my own. it's entirely possible to trace my online presence from place to place over the years (though it's getting harder with inactive accounts getting deleted all the time).
now i update a blogspot account, nathanandkylee.com, and sometimes myspace. they all reach different audiences, so i cross post. i think it's amusing how easy blogging and generally keeping everyone updated on your life is nowadays. when i was in hs, we all depended on aim away messages. now we have the ability to text our status to facebook or twitter in real time. blogs themselves are way more user-friendly than before - it's so easy to have an amazingly awesome layout with no knowledge of web at all.
do you think that if i ever got famous, people would find my old blogs from when i was 15 and publish them and everyone would pick apart my words and somehow declare me a psycho?

interviews suck
So......we all hate this project. Not the final product I mean (my group hasn't even seen it yet), but this assignment. We all hate interviewing. It's the most boring thing imaginable. I wasn't able to be present at either of the interviewing shoots since my life is so busy right now, so I took on the task of editing. I kind of took a VH-1 sort of style to this video to make it bearable. Of course I only spent a couple hours on it (mostly looking for my camera cord to capture with) so I didn't emulate that style to the best of my ability, but it's not bad. I think the pacing is ok - slows down a bit in a couple spots because I was PMSing and didn't care - and I'm wondering how it'll be received in class. The whole purpose behind the project was the lighting and field production techniques behind these types of interviews and I think our shots were good.

open letter to churches.
Dear churches,
There is a problem with churches nowadays. I assume that it has always existed but I'm not an expert in this field by any means, so I don't know (or care to know). These are just my observations with the problems churches have now - from a patron's perspective as well as an employee/volunteer perspective from one or two churches ONLY. Remember, I never said this is all churches - I consider myself to be a Christian. These are my experiences only. So save your snark for another day.
1. Pushing faith on others
At one point in a person's faith as a Christian, the Bible asks for you to more or less "recruit" people. Many people are good at this. Many more are not. I don't believe you should do this unless you know what you are doing, because it tends to have the opposite effect on people - most often permanently. You and your sad pitch-for-jeebus are all they will remember. I think turning people away from God by being a douche should be a bigger sin than not sharing your faith with others.
2. All up in your grill
Whether as a volunteer, employee, or patron of a church, once you go there for a while and take the next step in your faith to get involved, it seems like everyone suddenly takes this as an invitation to get up in your personal grill. This step doesn't involve opening up and sharing all your hidden sins but that's how it seems. Honestly, I would love to know why people who work for a church feel it's their personal duty to talk to you on behalf of God. Obviously if you have reached this point you have a pretty open channel. Which leads me to my next point..
3. Judgy-judgerson
The more you are involved in a church, the more it seems you are judged. And the more it seems like people think you are open to being judged. God is the only one who should ever judge, because his judgement is the only one that matters. Churches really don't get this. They often veil judgement by calling it something like accountability or consultation - calling you into a meeting and asking you personal questions that you should only share with God himself.
4. Shady business practices
I won't go into details, but the experiences I've had have been oh so shady. I realize a church is a business, and is the source of income for many people. I realize that certain things must be done in business to keep a profit turning. But whether you are a church, a McDonalds, or a locally owned specialty shop, there are things you just don't do. You don't give people raises in shady amounts, you don't do things to get tax cuts, you don't screw or take advantage of your employees, and you don't ask your own patrons to donate more when you yourself don't take a pay cut in order to keep living above the standard in your posh 100k+ home in the suburbs.
5. All fluff, no stuff
Many churches are catching onto the modern worship sort of style. These churches build huge buildings, have elaborate audio/visual setups, spend all their time on branding their sermons and marketing them, incorporate specialty crowd draws like a coffee bar, or research the best meeting times to get the most attendance. All this stuff is used by few churches in the right way. The rest of the copycats just fail, and their problem is the staff. They think they are willing to take risks - have controversial topics, risky formats, interesting and new techniques - but they only go halfway. They stay in the safe territory too much and just look foolish. If you are trying to brand your church as a new wave, modern worship but you have attendees that may not be comfortable with this, you need to be prepared to have a traditional service AND a modern service. You have to have the staffing and resources for that. The modern service needs to be filled with young, independent, and very open-minded individuals who have experience in ALL faiths but a deep commitment to God. They need to be great at multimedia, storytelling, and incorporating all sensory experiences into one package. If you can't do this without compromising your standards, you shouldn't try (which goes back to number 1 - permanently scarring people from attending church ever). The churches I have attended fail at this, but I know there are some that exist successfully.
6. God god god god god godogdogodogod
God is in everything, that's true. But then churches chalk EVERYTHING that happens up to God, it becomes contradictory. "God gave us this gift of money." One week later. "God took away this gift because *some long winded explanation.*" It's never "Shit happens." And if I understand free will, I would assume that there would be some "shit" that would "happen" in between God's doings (shady business practices perhaps?) I admit I could have this point all wrong, but imagine how this looks to someone who has little knowledge of Christianity and what it entails. It just makes you look stupid, like instead of thinking for yourself you dismiss it as God's doings.
I'm not perfect - nobody is or can be except God. Some people are more imperfect than others. I think the one thing most missing from the teaching of Christianity in the US is the principle of OPEN-MINDEDNESS. I have found much better company in people outside of my church, with mixed faiths, beliefs, morals, and histories, than I ever did at my past churches.
I don't really think that's just a coincidence.

meat eating revelation
today i was driving behind a stinky truck to go to lunch.
as i was sitting at a stoplight, i saw the occupants of the truck.
a little pig was sniffing around and sticking his little nose out of the side of the truck. i could see his little feet walking around too.
at that moment, i said to myself 'how can we eat such cute little things?'
and i began to question my carnivoriousness.
then i went to lunch and ate beans with pork in them.
maybe someday.

wedding updates
i thought i would update you all on the status of our wedding. diana, feel free to avert your eyes.
we (or i) have decided on sunday, june 7, 2009. why sunday? well, it's a lot cheaper. like 50% cheaper. and much easier to find places. also, it makes more sense to me to get married on the "sabbath" because you usually have your rehearsal the day before and it would be best for most of our bridal party to do this on saturday instead of a weekday.
the time we're planning on according to the venue we're looking at is 3 PM. yes, it's earlier than "regular weddings". eff that. i like the afternoon. people are less likely to wonder why we aren't serving alcohol (ps we don't want to) and less likely to want a full dinner. also, since it's a sunday, people could spend the weekend in indy, make the wedding the finale, and have enough time to drive home (not drunk since we aren't serving alcohol) and go to bed at a decent time so they can work monday (not hungover because we aren't serving alcohol).
the location i found and currently favor the most is valle vista golf club and conference center in greenwood. it's about 20 minutes south of downtown. i went to see the exterior today to see if it would be worth touring and it's in a very nice area down the street from the greenwood park mall. if the outside is anything like the inside, WANTS. it's not "too much" for my taste - nice and classy, and best of all - freakin affordable. the ceremony is $425 and the reception is $16.95/person. that's it. and it includes everything - chairs, linens, staff, food. the food included actually sounds good too, especially for an afternoon event. deli sandwich station with potato salad and hummus and pita bread, cheese, fruit, veggies, three hot appetizers, and drinks. awesome.
so more about the location. valle vista is a golf course, but they have this little area called the veranda. it overlooks the golf course and it's technically indoors and covered, but the walls come down to make it like you are outside. it's perfect for someone like me who is a freakin psycho about weather. it's basically useable no matter what kind of weather you have. and it's REALLY pretty. see:
they offer horse and carriage rides for the bride and her father to the ceremony, and then for the husband and wife afterwards. i haven't decided if that would be totally awesome or if i would feel like a douche.
michelle, one of my bridesmaids, has already bought her freakin dress. she bought it to wear to a prom so she could get more use out of it, but i still find it amusing she bought it already. the colors for the wedding are marine and silver, so the dresses are marine and im letting them choose their own styles in that color. here's the one she chose:
Diana, Katee, and Bre - you have to pick different styles than that. it can be similar, but not that exact one. nyah nyah.
i think that's it for updates. we're planning on engagement pictures may 14th and looking at dresses for the first time around then as well. so with the help of david's bridal dress your wedding fun tool, here's what our wedding is looking like:
From the far left, that's Michelle, Diana, Katee, Bre, Me, and Nathan to the best of my ability using the limited hair/skin combinations. I'm not saying who the groomsmen are yet since lazynathan has yet to tell them.

oh, and so was chelsea clinton. snore.
they were campaigning for hillary, of course. she is like her mother - well-spoken, but you can tell that she's been trained well and has bitchiness hidden just below the surface so beware. basically she fed the crowd a bunch of BS and they applauded. and she took questions and fed more BS and they applauded. i stood in a conspicuous place near the front of the crowd looking bored, unmoved, and disagreeable. i hope my peaceful protest made a bigger difference than the ron paul supporter who showed up and stood outside.

im in ur oven, time lapsin ur cookies.
we had to do some time lapses for our lighting and field production class and they turned out great.
the matrix is on. that's one of the first movies i ever watched the hours of dvd extras on and realized how much thought was put into post production. i luvs it.
i decided i need to make a pseudo-list of everything i need to do in the next 39 days (the rest of the semester):
Software project management
-A lot of little easy labs and quizzes
Client-side web programming
-A few retarded labs and quizzes
-A final website
Lighting and field production
-Interview shoot
-Mood/Chirasciro video
-Composite green screen video
Intermediate Sound
-Powerpoint about chorus effect
-Foley project - the most difficult project I may have ever been requested to do in the history of college. basically, you know the roof scene in the matrix (ha) with the spiffy 360 degree bullet time sequence? ok, i have to take that, delete the sound, and then create all the sound again (dialog, music, and sound effects) from scratch. im gonna puke.
